What Lies Below Review (2020)
A socially awkward teen returns home from summer camp and is surprised to learn that her mom has a new boyfriend who has been living at their lake house with her. At first glance, John is a very attractive man and Libby appears to a little crush on him as most teenage girls probably would. But Libby soon takes notice of some peculiar behavior patterns.
John is an aquatic biologist and spends a lot of time in the lake studying rare aquatic species. Libby notices the late-night walks and disappearances into the lake, and while on the lake together, her menstrual cycle came and he licked the blood. To make matters worse, he enters the bathroom unknowingly as she showers and appears to be turned on by the scent of her menstrual.
Fearing that this man was a psychopath and would harm both her and her mom, Libby attempts to call 911 but the signals are blocked. She then calls her friend Marley over for help and after explaining what took place, Marley offers to tell Libby’s mom about the situation. When Libby finally musters up the courage to confront her mom about John and the inappropriate things he had done, her mom called her a liar and accused her of trying to sabotage her relationship. At that point, I was not sure whether her mom was head over heels, desperate because she was a 40 something-year-old, and afraid she’d let a good thing go, or simply possessed by John.
Though this was a sci-fi horror movie, I found it more creepy than scary. The sight of a grown man inappropriately touching a teenage girl was uncomfortable to watch. It was as though he was trying to seduce her as well. Both Libby and her mother’s fate seemed doomed from the moment John entered their lives I secretly hoped I was wrong. The ending was totally unexpected and left me with many questions.
